“Study the past if you would define the future.” – Confucius

Intent

At St Patrick’s we are all historians! We aim to inspire our children to be fascinated by the past and to connect it to the present and the future. Our high-quality History curriculum aims to stimulate pupils’ interest in History and to enable them to understand about events and the lives of others in the past and in a way which has relevance to their own lives. Some may grow up wanting to be archaeologists, museum curators, archivists, or research analysts, but we aim to empower all to make connections between their learning about the past that will help them as future decision-makers and global citizens.

By the end of their school career, they will have a secure understanding of chronology and will develop a sense of identity, set within their historical heritage. Our children will learn about aspects of local, British and global history from ancient to modern times which will lead to children having knowledge of historical development in the wider world. Our high quality, diverse History curriculum prepares children for living and working in modern multicultural Britain.

We aim for our children to have rich opportunities to develop their History “capital”. They are given broad and balanced historical opportunities; links are made across the curriculum, and children are exposed to history beyond of the classroom through meeting relevant visitors and engaging in local trips to museums and historical sites.  Our curriculum enables children to enjoy History and understand its importance through a wide range of opportunities while developing their skills of enquiry, interpretation, evaluation and presentation.

“History is instructive. What it suggests to people is that even if they do little things, if they walk on the picket line, if they join a vigil, if they write a letter to their local newspaper… Anything they do, however small, becomes part of a much larger sort of flow of energy. And when enough people do enough things, however small they are, then change takes place.” Howard Zinn, American historian (1922-2010)
