Year 2 have just enjoyed a fantastic trip to Thurstaston! Mr Kirwan took us on a brilliant walking trail along the beach and showed us where smugglers used to try to sneak in banned goods in the past! We also made some amazing sand sculptures based on our designs as part of our art topic. Miss Shack also took a group of artists to draw some sketches of the beautiful surroundings. What a great day!
We have been learning to programme Spheros using the app on our iPads. We can move the robot around, programme a route for it and even record a message for it to deliver!
We had a special visit from Barnie the Dinosaur today to help us start our new whole-school book “Dear Dinosaur”! Barnie was a little bit silly, but he was very friendly! We learned about the height and length of a real tyrannosaurus rex, as well as finding out about their diet. We can’t wait to read our new book!
On Friday Eco Club had a wonderful time rescuing tadpoles and other pond wildlife from our old pond, and moving them carefully to our beautiful new pond. Two frogs kept popping their heads up to watch us! Can you remember some of the creatures you spotted Eco Club?
Year 2 have begun to learn about how electricity works. We looked at household items that use electricity and talked about some important health and safety issues, before carrying out an investigation into electrical circuits. We used batteries and crocodile clips to make closed circuits that included bulbs, buzzers or motors; some groups even managed to include all 3 at once, but we found that we sometimes needed more batteries as an extra power source to make sure there was enough electricity to share around!
Great work, Year 2! How many household items can you think of that use electricity?
We had great fun this afternoon making our own marble runs! We are entering a marble run competition run by CLEAPSS. The rules are: the marble must not stop for more than 1 second, the structure cannot be more than 1m tall, and there can only be a maximum of 5 people in a team. The aim is to design and build an interesting marble run that keeps the marble in motion for as long as possible.
Thank you to all the parents who came in to help; you were amazing! Take a look at some of fantastic marble runs in action!
We had a lovely yoga session today, as part of our Science and PE Week, with Olivia from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. We stretched our muscles and thought about the effect of a calming, fun and relaxing yoga session on our bodies and minds. It was a great start to the day!
Year 2 have been having fun learning about flight – this is one of our science topics. We carried out an investigation using balloons to see how far we could fly a balloon with different amounts of air blown into them! We found out that the more air we blew into the balloon the further it went!
In Year 2, we have been finding out about some important inventions and the scientists who invented them! Read our comments to find out more…
Here are some poems which our KS1 children might enjoy reading. They all link to your science unit, Toys: and introduction to phyics.
